(If time allows, she'll share a bit about her new 1973 docu-novel: TRUTH, LIES, AND THE QUESTIONS IN BETWEEN.)

The Science of Decodable: How to Use Them (K-5) Sponsored by Curriculum Associates
This session will focus on how to use a decodable text. We will begin by identifying the purposes of decodables and the developmental juncture at which they may be most useful. It will focus on how to introduce students to decodable text, how to do a bookwalk—not a picturewalk—in a decodable, and how to follow up. It will also address the importance of using a phonics scope and sequence when choosing each other. Lastly, it will clarify how not to use decodables: with ineffective practices that don’t make use of the textual scaffolds.

“Liter-AT” Using Technology to Support Literacy Instruction for Students with Disabilities
This session explores how assistive technology (AT) can enhance literacy instruction for students with disabilities by ensuring access to the curriculum. Participants will learn about various AT tools, from low-tech solutions like highlighters and slant boards to high-tech options such as text-to-speech apps and digital accessibility features that support reading and writing development. The session will also address the integration of AT within Specially Designed Instruction (SDI), showing how technology empowers students by fostering independence, engagement, and academic success. Educators will leave with practical strategies for implementing AT effectively in their classrooms to meet students’ literacy needs.

A Pathway to Knowledge
In many classrooms, teachers are forced to teach broadly. This undermines the building of content knowledge for learners. In this session, participants will explore strategies to build knowledge through topic-focused instruction. Participants will have a chance to see where knowledge building fits within the body of research around reading. They will also have opportunity to reflect on topic-focused instruction to see how it might fit into their current practice.

Systematic Phonics Instruction is Key to Helping All Students Get on the Road to Reading
The science of reading validates that explicit and systematic instruction is the key to building strong foundational skills. Getting students on grade level right from the start is crucial but does not always happen, especially for students from low socioeconomic status, English Language Learners, and students with disabilities. This session will explore why students struggle and how embedded mnemonics and multisensory action tricks can speed up the process. Join this session to also learn about the three key areas in the brain involved in learning to read, and how we can retrain underused neurons to boost reading development. These simple but powerful additions may be what your core program is missing.

Let Them Read! Making the Case for Independent Reading in Schools
The recent shift of literacy instruction in Virginia has teachers and students overscheduled with literacy tasks and mandates pushing out time to just read and enjoy choice books. Concern about this trend of “We don’t have time!” prompted the Virginia Association of School Librarians (VAASL), to create a one-pager titled Building Independent Readers. Participants will receive a copy of the one-pager, hear the story behind its creation from two of its authors, and have time to discuss and brainstorm ways to encourage Virginia students to choose books and escape through literacy.
